Since I have begun my new journey to Ubuntu Linux , a little problem I faced was how do I use my Tata Photon Plus with Ubuntu to access the Internet.
I plugged in photon plus and I expected it would automatically be loaded or Ubuntu would find necessary driver for it. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
Fortunately , I found a solution which is as described below :
- Go to System > Preference > Network Connections
- Click on “ Mobile Broadband “ Tab
- Click Add

- you would see figure like below , click forward

- Select India, Click Forward
- select Tata indicom Photon Plus, Click Forward

- Click Apply
- Enter Username and password as “ Internet ” , Click Apply
- Now click on wireless network and click on tata photon plus and you would be connected .
Hi Ankur,
This solution is given by many people and still after selecting these settings the ubuntu 10.10 doesn’t identify the device after rebooting.
If you have any suggestion reply soon.
could you elaborate this.
Did you check at top right box where you catch wifi , Tata photon plus would be listed there .
For any query , reply back and I would try to help you more
Hi Ankur, As Tanmay replied it is not even detecting the devise. The lsusb gives this as the output:

Hello Ankur,
I am at my wit’s end and hope you can help me.
Ubuntu 11.04 is not even detecting the Tata Photon+ device. I tried your suggestion and that did not work.
Please help.
Ben
Hi Ben
What do you mean by not even detecting ? Have you attached and memory card in it which is not detecting.
As far as device is concerned , the above method works very well in 11.10 also. I am personally using it. It even works for MTS and other connections too.
I use tata photon+ prepaid unlimited plan.Had no problems in using the usb modem (installed it the way u have described).
Unfortunately,at the end of my bundled usage(in this case 10GB/month),the HSIA network is no longer available & in windows XP I need to change the network type to CDMA manually in the Huawei access manager.
How do you do this in Ubuntu 11.10?
Please help
Those who have internet working but want to switch modes between ‘Photon+’ and ‘Photon Whiz’ speeds (EVDO, 1xRTT) and Hybrid modes on Linux itself (instead of requiring Windoze for the task), I recently found the solution after TONNES of wandering around on the internet, and thought it’d share it. Here goes.
Install Minicom from the package manager. It was in the repositories on my Ubuntu-based distro (dunno about other distros).
Connect your modem, let modem-manager manage it, but do NOT connect to the internet (don’t select a connection).
In a terminal, run -
sudo minicom -D /dev/ttyUSB2
After it initializes – if we have specified the correct interface (‘/dev/ttyUSB0′) you should be able to type right away. If not, try the same thing but with /dev/ttyUSB0, 1, etc. In my case it was 2.
Now, you can enter AT commands. Stuff like -
ati
(gives device info)
There are tons of other AT commands which do a lot of fun stuff, but the one for us right now is -
at^prefmode?
(to know what mode is set currently. There are three modes, 2 = 1xRTT, 4 = EVDO, 8 = Hybrid)
at^prefmode=2
(will change it to force 1xRTT, change the last number according to what you want – like I said above, 2 = 1xRTT, 4 = EVDO, 8 = Hybrid)
It should give an affirmative statement.
Quit Minicom by pressing Ctrl+A, Q, and then selecting ‘Yes’.
Now select your connection. Check if the speed difference occured (1x is the slow one, EVDO is the fast one).
If you have any problems, leave a comment here, or go to the IRC channel of network manager (#nm on freenode).
Epic levels of thanks to dcbw of network-manager for patiently getting this to work for me over IRC.
FWIW, some AT command-related links I found in the process (not really of any use to the average user)

Hi Ankur,
The steps you have mentioned aren’t helping. After adding the device in the Mobile Broadband tab in the Network Editor, the device does not even show up in the networks menu. But is present in the lsusb. How do I solve this?
Please help!
Thanks
Sindhu
Have your tried rebooting . Pls post screen shot of your networks would help me solving your problem. In my case Mobile Broadband is displayed with Tata Photon+ shown 2 times.
i do not get below screen shot when
point no 4
Could you post a screenshot on what are you getting other than what I have posted.
I am having the same problem. My computer detects it. I added it in Mobile Broadband, changed username and password, but whenever i dial it, it takes a while and then returns Unable to Connect.
There is no problem with my dongle, it works perfectly fine in windows OS
Are you sure you typed the username and password correctly. Its ” Internet ” (capital I). if you get any error message etc. then post it here and I will try to help you out.
hello ankur
i work up to monile broadband. i’m unable to do next step. i’ woking with 11.10
Which Step are you referring to ?
i have dialed it too with “Internet” as password but still it shows unable to connect.
What should i do?
Pls help.
so ya faced the same problems with configurin photon+.but i got a diff problem.my photon plus is detecting as qualcomm cdma technologies msm instead of huaywie technologies huaywei mobiles.Refer to the diagram right after step 4.couldn connect int the end.
Thanks Ankur, it really worked, actually I was trying to install it myself and everytime I inserted it in USB port (I thought) it was not detected but after reading this post, I simply clicked on network status icon on right side of screen top and enabled Mobile Broadband, after which I clicked on “edit connections” and then followed your advice.
Actually I was in trouble as my Windows has some problem and I’m getting usual Error 711 and 633 which were preventing me from connecting to Tata Photon Network, local service center of Tata Photon was also not responding so I was looking for an alternative approach and now your post has helped me greately.
It worked instantly (without actually using the software available on it for installation).
Thanks once again.
An Indian recently posted..Rising Living Cost and Cost of Basic Amenities in India
using Natty Narwhal release… i plugged in my USB Photon+, and the system recognized it, but wouldn’t connect… after some internet searches, i performed the following: installed latest .deb of modeswitch amd64 and modeswitch all. i then added the device, un: “internet” and pw “internet.” success! the device worked. after restarting my computer, however, ubuntu no longer recognizes the device! (it doesn’t show up in my internet connections). i know the device is recognized by the system, lsusb gives Bus 005 Device 006 as ID 12d1:1505 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. idVendor 0x12d1 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and idProduct 0×1505… HOW do i get my Network Manager to recognize this device again?!?! what went wrong?!?! why did installing modeswitch cause it to no longer recognize the device? (i’ve restarted multiple times, plugged the device in and out, etc., to no avail)…
